6 km south of Lübz and 17 km west of Plau am See lies the former parish village of Kreien. Kreien is one of the Mecklenburg villages that had already been acquired by the Stepenitz Monastery in the 13th century. After the secularization of the monastic estates in the 16th century, Kreien came under the ducal domain administration. In 1885, for example, the village counted 12 hereditary tenants, 19 smallholders, and 7 cottagers.
“The church is a Gothic structure built from blasted stone with flat gables at both the east and west ends. There is no separation between the choir and the nave, and it lacks a tower.” – Prof. Schlie: The Art and Historical Monuments of Mecklenburg, 1901
In 1799, the then-parish priest Adolf Gottlieb Susemihl persuaded Duke Friedrich Franz I. of Mecklenburg to replace the old parsonage with a new building. By 1800, he was able to move into the new half-timbered house built from oak from the Woostener Heide.
As was common until the 19th century, the priests ran a small farm on the side to support themselves and their households. The partially preserved parsonage barn, featuring a beautiful vaulted cellar, dates from this period. Around 1910, the parsonage was extended with an approximately 100 sqm utility wing and a charming small conservatory. The garage and wood shed were added more recently.
In 2012, the church separated from the house, and the new owner carried out several preservation and maintenance measures. Among other things, the chimneys were rebuilt, parts of the timber framing were renewed, and the electrical system was updated. The interior was minimally altered, preserving the impression of “the good old days,” as if the priest had just moved out yesterday.
The house is partially basemented, with a partially finished attic. Heating is provided by tiled stoves. The house features beautiful wooden floors and some original tiles. There is a large country-style kitchen. Wastewater is directed into a sealed septic tank.
The property includes several fruit trees and a vegetable garden. The Kreiener See, with its jetty and swimming area, is only about 500 meters away as the crow flies.
