Brandenburg an der Havel: Castle for auction

Steffen Seibel
State:
Germany, Brandenburg an der Havel, Plaue. Viable utilization concept and high investments required: Baroque three-wing castle complex with park in the Brandenburg district of Plaue has been used only sporadically for years. Now, the ensemble in need of renovation will be auctioned off by the Potsdam District Court in a real estate auction on June 22, 2022.

Who delivers the new edition of the "novel scenery" - baroque castle with potential

Theodor Fontane has written an extensive chapter in his supplementary volume "Five Castles" of his famous Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg about Plaue and its castle. He was a regular guest there and described the baroque palace with its English landscape park, built around 1711 by Friedrich von Görne, among other things as a "wonderful novel scenery in the nest of lamentations". While the Fontane path and the Fontane monument in the castle park are popular waypoints for excursionists in the Brandenburg district of Plaue, tourists are presented with a rather dreary scene at "Schloßstraße 21" today: there were many plans in the past, but for years the gray plaster of the formative Baroque castle on Lake Plaue has been crumbling away. More than a provisional use as a cafe or event location has not been possible for the castle so far.

Much taken, little done: Castle rebuilt after 1945 and no longer substantially renovated

Hotel, conference center, luxury flats or assisted living - the classic potential uses for abandoned castles for sale in need of redevelopment did not go unmentioned in Plaue. However, the fundamentally touristic potential is countered by a great need for redevelopment. During the various post-war uses, the castle was rebuilt several times. The largely undecorated rooms and the disappearing baroque splendor of the ballroom, together with previous approaches to redevelopment, result in a difficult picture that will only become a lasting eye-catcher with an economic utilization concept and the willingness to make extensive investments.
