“Baszta Monstrancja” is a listed fortified tower dating from the 13th to 15th century. As an integral part of the medieval fortifications of the Teutonic Order, this structure is a representative example of Northern European defensive architecture within the UNESCO-recognized historic city center.
The tower is located at Podmurna Street 11, one of the historic streets running along the former city walls in the heart of the Old Town of Toruń. The surrounding area is characterized by historic buildings, small-scale gastronomy, boutique hotels, and tourist infrastructure, and is one of the most heavily frequented parts of the Old Town. As a result, the location offers strong urban presence and high visibility.
Building Description and Key Data
This is a freestanding, octagonal tower constructed of solid brick, with an impressive structural presence.
- Floor plan: Octagonal (approx. 9 m diameter)
- Total area: approx. 75 m²
- Levels: Basement, ground floor, 1st floor, 2nd floor, small attic level
- Wall thickness: up to 2.5 meters
- Architectural details: historic arrow slits (crossbow positions), restored decorative elements, and a multi-stage load-bearing structure.
Building Condition
The exterior shell of the tower has been extensively preserved and restored under conservation supervision. Recent works included roof and window replacement as well as documented façade renovation.
The interior remains in shell condition and can be completed according to individual requirements.
A central heating system is already installed. Connections for electricity, gas, and sewage are available.
Sanitary facilities are not currently installed, but can be added technically.
A heritage property with largely flexible usage options
The tower is fully protected as a listed monument. Any structural modifications require coordination with the relevant heritage conservation authority. Within these constraints, relatively flexible usage options are possible, in particular:
- private residential use
- studio or office space
- rental holiday property
- cultural or gastronomic use (e.g., small café or bar concept)
