Spain’s architectural heritage is strongly shaped by regional differences. The development of historic properties ranges from medieval fortifications to representative country estates of the nobility and industrial families.
Classification of building types
- Castillo: Fortified castle complexes, often dating from the period of the Reconquista.
- Palacio: Palaces and representative rural or urban residences.
- Casa palacio: Stately urban manor houses; typical for Spanish city centers, these grand residences combine the structural layout of a town mansion with the architectural luxury and inner courtyards of a palace.
- Casa señorial / solariega: Manor houses and ancestral homes; while casa señorial is a general term for a manor house, casa solariega refers specifically to the historic ancestral seat of a Spanish noble family.
- Mansión: Stately residences and grand estates; similar to the French demeure, the term denotes a prestigious, architecturally prominent property that can range from historic period mansions to modern luxury villas across any location.
- Finca: Legally, the term denotes any registered plot of land in Spain. In a traditional context, a finca rústica refers to an agricultural estate with functional farm buildings. Today, the term is frequently used as a generic marketing label for any rural or suburban house, contrasting with its original agrarian definition.

Cortijo (Southern Spain)
Traditional rural estates of the Andalusian countryside. They typically consist of a main house, stables and agricultural buildings arranged around a central courtyard (patio). The thick, whitewashed walls help regulate indoor temperatures during the summer months.
Hacienda (Southern Spain)
Large rural estates combining Moorish, Gothic and Renaissance influences. Typical features include representative main buildings with arcades and galleries, reflecting the status of their former owners.
Possessió (Mallorca)

Pazo and casona (Northern Spain)
The Pazos of Galicia are traditional aristocratic country residences. The Casonas – large noble estates in Cantabria and Asturias – are distinguished by their northern Spanish stone architecture and often prominent family coats of arms above the entrance.
