A Château Steeped in History and Classical Grandeur
After crossing the Saulx River and entering the island, a grand avenue lined with century-old plane trees unfolds, offering views of exceptional charm and romanticism. It leads to a pair of majestic pillars topped with sphinxes, marking the entrance to the courtyard. Straight ahead, a monumental column can be seen in the distance.
The square courtyard is framed by two corner pavilions and faces the château itself, which consists of a central block flanked by two pavilions and topped with broken Mansard-style attics. Though symmetrical in form, the centerpiece is a monumental portico in classical style, featuring four pilasters beneath a large pediment richly adorned with exceptional sculptural work.
The semicircular windows are crowned with various mascarons (sculpted faces), directly inspired by those at the Palace of Versailles. The central mascaron, representing Hercules, is an echo of the one above the fireplace in the Salon d’Hercule by Robert de Cotte, accompanied by a trophy of arms with a mace and quiver (1712–1736). Other figures - Flora, Ceres, Bacchus, and Poseidon - draw from the Salon de la Guerre, designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and completed by Charles Le Brun in 1686.
Apparently completed in 1741, the château is a direct architectural and decorative tribute to these grand French interiors. Severely damaged during World War I, the property was fully restored, presumably around 1925 by André Champetier de Ribes (oral source, to be confirmed).
