From a distance, it almost looks like a bunker, a watchtower or even a new building, rising somewhat strangely among the old olive groves in the hinterland of Brindisi. But on closer inspection, the uniqueness of this structure unfolds: this so-called masseria is an Apulian farmhouse, the likes of which can only be found in southern Italy. Such a masseria was originally not only an agricultural property, but also a fortified refuge for the farmers and inhabitants for protection against raids and robberies. This explains the particular circumstance that the first floor is almost windowless.
Distributed on three levels and with a total area of about 145 square meters, the farmhouse includes twelve rooms, each decorated with distinctive star vaults and a barrel vault. The second floor is accessible by an internal staircase and has a small terrace of about 15 square meters, which offers an idyllic place to enjoy the view of the Apulian countryside. The spacious and expandable roof terrace of about 60 square meters offers further opportunities for leisure and relaxation.
A unique addition to the farmhouse is a votive chapel of about 25 square meters. It is dedicated to the twin saints of medicine, Cosmas and Damian, and reflects the deep devotion that the previous owners had for these holy persons.
This "spiritual testimony" of Apulian history needs a complete renovation in order to make it habitable and meet contemporary living requirements.
A spacious living area could be created on the first floor, and on the second floor there would be space for three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Because of their uniqueness, renovated masserias today are also often used for gastronomy or tourism, e.g. as boutique hotels.
