Thomas-Hanbury-Villa in Ventimiglia-Latte

Corso Arturo Toscanini, Latte

Who would not have liked to go to school here - Sir Thomas Hanbury from England was one of the well-known Ligurian emigrants and is best known in Italy for the botanical garden Giardini botanici Hanbury in Ventimiglia-Mortola.

In his adopted country, he also made a name for himself as an educational politician, promoting the financing and construction of several schools at Cape La Mortola. This sea-view school building donated by Hanbury dates from 1892 and is located not far from Palazzo Orengo in Ventimiglia-Latte.

Hanbury was also active as a real estate investor in other Ligurian coastal towns and was instrumental in the tourist development of now-famous towns such as Alassio through the construction of villas and hotels.

Several historic buildings in the region have been endowed with a commemorative plaque in recognition of his work.
