Medieval four-winged castle from the 16th century in Dordogne with 5 hectares of land.

In a beautiful corner of Périgord Vert, this imposing castle was erected in the second half of the 16th century on medieval foundations. In 1653, the establishment was elevated to a Marquisate, signifying its paramount importance.

With a square layout flanked by four impressive round towers, this powerful fortress presents an especially beautiful entry through a grand entrance gate with a tall, four-sided roof. The roof of the entrance gate is currently being renewed (prior to sale and at the expense of the current owner).

Within the courtyard, the main building faces the entrance, adorned with mullioned windows and dormer windows. The entrance door is richly embellished with Corinthian capitals and a remarkable door crown adorned with spirals and mascarons.

The right wing in the north features a magnificent gallery with three arches, and within the double thickness of this wing lie gigantic vaulted medieval kitchens with an extraordinary 16th-century fireplace bearing numerous inscriptions. This wing was cleaned after a fire and remains empty and unfurnished. The left wing in the south presents a series of beautiful and large rooms, some redecorated in the 18th and 19th centuries. Some ceilings with beams and profiled beams are particularly noteworthy. A large outdoor area south of the castle is open on the ground floor and equipped with arcades.

The main building wing boasts a very beautiful and wide straight staircase leading to notably carefully crafted stone arches. The interiors evoke the grand original rooms lost in a fire. A splendid wall fountain in an arch with consoles, one of them adorned with grooves and a stone basin. Some 18th-century door frames, including a floor-to-ceiling window on the ground floor with its bolt.

The entrance wing showcases, on the ground floor, arcades and numerous beautiful and spacious rooms, as well as a stone spiral staircase.

All towers and the entrance gate are adorned with battlements. The towers feature beautiful fireplaces on each floor. Only one of the towers has a roof (new framework under sheet metal). Overall, many original elements remain: stone stairs, fireplaces from the 16th to 18th centuries, fireplace plates, ceilings with profiled beams and beams, nailed plank floors, exterior door frames, interior door frames. This architecture is characterized by magnificent, very bright volumes with very large openings. Most rooms have double exposure.

The Château is surrounded by 5 hectares of contiguous land with meadows and forests. Additionally, there is an outbuilding covering an area of 300 m². The entire property with all constructions is classified in France as a historical monument (Monument historique).

HISTORICAL NOTE:
Built for the de Rastignac family in the 16th century, this castle bears similarities to other major fortresses of that time in Périgord and to the work of architect Nicolas Rambourg (1559-1649), primarily active in Hautefort. It's noteworthy that the de Rastignac family was particularly associated with the Hautefort and Puyguilhem families. Its defensive architecture stems from the tumultuous religious wars in this region, notably when the Protestants took nearby Thiviers, and Louis de Rastignac commanded the nobility of Périgord for the king against the Protestants.
