Benedictine monastery from the 12th century.
Former monastery with four apartments for sale in Casale Litta near Varese (Lombardy).
Amidst the picturesque hilly landscape of the Varese region rises a truly impressive property: a former Benedictine monastery dating back to the 12th century in the idyllic hamlet of Casale Litta. The historic complex now houses four separate apartments with own entrances, arranged around the arcaded courtyard. Noteworthy is the small chapel, probably built on an earlier Longobard oratory.
The entire estate is surrounded by a park, which covers an area of 6,000 m² and is partially surrounded by a stone wall. The park is planted with beautiful medium and tall-growing trees, including magnolias, Judas trees, majestic palms, impressive dogwoods and magnificent camellias. Outside the park-like setting extends an adjacent forest that covers an area of 10,000 square feet and complements the property in a charming way.
Cultural-Historical Significance & Restoration History
The monastery was restored in the 1920-ies and conserved conservatively by the current owners in 1976 and in 2008. The entire complex is protected by the Ministry of Culture and Environment and is listed by S. Lanqé among the villas of the provinces of Como and Varese.
Interior
Inside the complex, the beauty of past eras is revealed to the observer. The massive oak and chestnut doors are original and exude an incomparable elegance. The floors of beola and Lombard cotto, which date back to the end of the 18th century, also delight with their colorfulness and are a real eye-catcher. The mostly wood-paneled ceilings with exposed beams are sometimes ornately decorated. There is at least one fireplace in every apartment.
A great highlight on the property is a large century-old wine press, which has been preserved in perfect condition and draws the eye.
